As shown in the Bank Lending Survey – February 2020, published by the National Bank of Romania on March 2nd, in the final quarter of 2019, credit standards for non-financial corporations changed marginally, both at aggregate level and by company size and loan maturity. Most of the factors that may have a bearing on credit standards did not impact the latter. The only elements that played a role in the tightening of credit standards were the current or expected capital position of the bank, as well as the NBR’s monetary policy decisions and prudential measures.

According to the press released of the European Central Bank on euro area bank lending survey, dated January 21st, credit standards remained broadly unchanged for both loans to enterprises and housing loans; demand for loans to enterprises declined, while demand for housing loans increased further; Euro area banks use TLTRO-III liquidity largely for granting loans.

According to the remarks made by Luis de Guindos, Vice-President of the ECB, published within the press release of the European Central Bank, in recent months, incoming euro area data have continued to be weak and the economy has grown below expectations. That is, euro area real GDP increased by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter of 2018 (according to preliminary estimates), which was slightly up from 0.1% in the quarter before, but well below the 0.4% growth observed in the first half of 2018.
